How to: create a Character?

You can click on the NPC Generator Image icon of a beholder to have it dream up a character, it is written as text.

Each time you click the beholder it will generate a new textual character. It can remember the previously 10 generated characters in your local storage, scroll down to see it there. Everytime you generate a new character the previous one is remembered once this way. After that all is forgotten.

There is a limited memory function. 10 rng characters can be remembered. If you leave this page the memory is cleaned. This makes it possible to quickly generate a couple of characters, but it is up to the user to save the text.

There is a button. After clicking it, you can paste the text anywhere you want, for example a note-taking app or notepad.

If available, you will see a stock image of the DnD race that was randomized selected.

In the section "Customize generated character" you have the option to set a few parameters for the generator.

About: Character Generator

This tool consults the 2014 DMG. Tables on page 89-96, it rolls dices on each table and notes the results It also consults the public lore on naming conventions for each race, if applicable to get a unique npc name loyal to lore, herritage, race-naming conventions. It takes into account if a race is tiny, medium or large. It describes an NPC Appearance based on the noted results.

The 2024 DMG. page 84 - 98 added the use of Statblocks, this is default generated for each npc by "4d6 drop lowest" and auto assigned in which the dnd player class is disregarded, so you might get a Wizard with low Intelligence, a Barbarian that can't lift a pebble, a Rogue that can't sneak, a bard that wanted to be a Paladin or Warlock, or even Druids with of-the-charts Wisdom, anything is possible. Statblock stats do not impact an npc High and Low Ability, so you might end up with a Fighter that has the Intelligence of a scientist yet is described as npc of monumental stupidity. If you don't like certain results, just reroll for a new npc. If you need more control consult the Dungeon Masters Guide, both 2014 and 2024 editions.

Don't go Overboard

Developing nonplayer chracters can be fun. That said, use your time wisely. Beware of writing three pages of backstory for an NPC whose interactions with the adventurers will be over in three minutes. This tool is meant to help you create an interesting character quickly while providing just enough detail. - 2024 DMG 88

How to: customize prompt?

Enter a firstname or any of the other values as text input first. Select a class. If you set these values and click on the NPC Generator, icon of a beholder the Beholder will use your input while randomly dreaming up an NPC. To have it dream up a character without properties leave the values blank. With empty values the Beholder will dream based on lore. Set a firstname, lastname or nickname if you wish to see that back in most descriptions. (it depends on certain conditions)

What about: Homebrew prompt?

Homebrew Race will use the text input as name of your race, but the Beholder will randomly dream up a totally random outcome named after this value. Technically Hombre Race is a placeholder and will swap the race name in the result. If you have designed or chosen an unsupported race, then perhaps write your own result inspired by the output given. You can either choose no race, one race OR homebew a race-name. You cant have both. If the Homebrew Race field holds a value it will be used, leave it empty if you want to choose out of the list of existing and supported races.

Certain generated results don't include a nickname or firstname or both, it depends on the race that is generated, if available information provided that a certain race does not use one of the above, then it is omitted in the generated result. Dream again for different results.

Chose a race in the list for specific generated results, if left blank the result can be any race, if selected it will be the selected race. Your selection here limits result possibilities of the generator.

What about: Villain prompt?

Using the form to Set Character Options you can check a box to have Non Player Villains statblock generated too. This is a bonus feature to provide job security for heroes.
